A 10-77 was transmitted for a fire on the 10th floor of the Petersfield building, located at 301 East 21st Street. The fire was started in apartment 10C by an unattended candle in the living room and quickly spread to the other rooms. Firefighting efforts were hampered by Collyers Mansion conditions in the apartment, with over three feet of clothes and other furnishings throughout. The Petersfield building is extremely unusual in that although it is a hi-rise fireproof building with no fire escapes, each floor only has one stairway, and the building is not sprinklered. NYC building code requires two means of egress from every occupancy, or floor in the case of a class J-2 high rise fireproof multiple dwelling, but this building was built before these codes were instituted and thus grandfathered in. Additionally there was a fatal fire in this building a year ago, in the north wing.

After returning from a run, the members of Squad 18 were standing out front of quarters enjoying the summer evening. We began smelling a burning plastic odor out front of quarters. We checked the garbage cans, the alley, up and down the street, but could not find it. Even people on the street wee asking us where it was coming from. While still searching, a box came in for an automatic alarm at Saint Vincent’s hospital. Getting off the rig, the maintenance people said there was a fire in the elevator machine room atop the Coleman building. Saint Vincent’s hospital is made up of a number older buildings that have been interconnected, some dating back to 1929. The fire was located in the elevator machine room, atop the 18 story Coleman building. We were able to take elevator in another building to the 10th floor, but had to walk the other nine floors to the roof. The fire was extinguished in an hour and a half Squad 18, backed up by 3 Engine and assisted by 5 and 12 Truck

Gusts near 50 MPH ripped the top floor off of a building under construction in the West Village, showering the streets with wooden forms and rebar. The 15 story building located 469 W. 12th on West Street between 12th and Bethune was not the only building to experience problems due to the high winds. The winds sent a loose chain crashing into the side of the Trump SoHo tower on Saturday night, cracking windows and showering the street with glass. The cable at the Trump SoHo project was swinging from the 26th floor when it hit the north side of the tower at 246 Spring St. around 10 p.m.
